Description
Big Beautiful Door is like no other dynamics processor. It takes a completely fresh approach to EQ and dynamics, and packages it in a way that just makes sense.
We as audio engineers have to problem-solve quite a bit when mixing. Whether it’s voiceover or music, we often have to compromise in order to do achieve our goals. For instance, when we’re dealing with a noisy track, we could gate it, but removing everything below the threshold will likely sound unnatural. Or we could EQ it and compromise the overall tone of the signal. Neither option is ideal. But what if we could do a combination of BOTH at the same time?

Introducing the Big Beautiful Door from Boz Digital Labs. It’s actually an EQ that gets triggered like a gate. Basically, it allows you to EQ a track differently depending on the volume of the track at a specific time, allowing you to create two separate EQs for the same track! We here at Recordingoftware.com love this plug-in, as it’s a lot more useful, and sounds more natural, than a normal gate for many applications. This is especially apparent when we’re dealing with a project with fewer audio tracks. Here, the silence that a typical gate creates is easily noticeable, as is the negative effect of too much EQ. Luckily for us, we don’t have to choose any more.
Boz has given us a great degree of control over these problems with this plug-in. The visual input display facilitates setting the threshold to the appropriate level, which you can do via a “threshold” control on the right. From there we have two EQ channels that switch when the track crosses the threshold. The envelope controls at the bottom allow you to set the attack and release time of the gate to best optimize it for your track. And with sidechain features, you can use another track to trigger the gate, opening up the Big Beautiful Door to many other uses. If you’re interested in saving time and giving your mixes greater flexibility, or simply want to have the least intrusive options available, the Big Beautiful Door is an extremely useful problem solver that can make your job as an audio engineer a lot easier!
Features:
- Two separate stages of EQ which are triggered at different volume thresholds
- Intuitive controls simplify EQ/gating process
- Visual Input Display maps out waveform, making it easy to set the threshold
- Envelope controls allow you to control the speed and depth of the gate as it moves above and below the threshold
- Sidechain feature allows use of a different audio track to move above or below threshold – allowing the BBD to create space in your mix
- Save presets for later recall
Dual EQ
- Each channel has three-band EQ with gain, frequency, and resolution controls
- EQ changes from the first channel to the second when volume dips below threshold (and vice versa when above threshold)
- Bypass either channel to apply EQ to one channel while leaving the other untouched
- Solo one channel for monitoring (or creative effect)
- Save presets for later recall
Visual Input Display
- Recreates waveform in center of plug-in interface, emphasizing dynamics
- Allows for easy setting of threshold and simplified monitoring, saving time
- Threshold set via “Threshold” bar which lines up exactly with waveform, allowing you to match it to your track’s peaks and valleys
Envelope Controls
- Set the attack and release time of the gate to best optimize it for your track, preventing the gate from coming in too quickly or slowly, or applying the EQ too drastically
- Attack and release knobs control the speed at which the gate operates
- Ratio controls affect the impact of gate
- “Hold” control keeps envelope open longer
- “Lookahead” allows the plug-in to switch between EQ channels BEFORE the audio crosses the threshold, minimizing interference and preventing clipping
- “Hysteresis” adjusts threshold for use with sidechain input
Sidechain
- Using another track’s audio to trigger the threshold that switches the EQ channels
- Set using “internal” and “external” controls
- Sidechain has separate EQ with two modes – one with high and low-pass filters and one with a single EQ with Q and BPF controls
Noise Reduction
- EQ tracks differently at different volume levels
- Prevent noise from infiltrating your mix without having to drastically EQ
- EQ noisy frequencies when your tracks are quiet, and leave them untouched when loud
- Keep room tone intact while editing voiceover while also specifically reducing unpleasant frequencies between words
- Set second EQ channel settings to 0 to mimic a traditional gate by removing everything below the threshold
Creating Space In Your Mix
- Use Sidechain to trigger a separate audio track to cross the threshold, and use that track as a guide to set your EQ channels
- Save low end by setting the BBD as your bass guitar’s EQ with the kick as a sidechain, giving both much needed room to breath
- Keep your overheads untouched throughout a song, dipping harsh frequencies during aggressive cymbal crashes
- Use whenever instruments clash in a specific frequency range
Available Formats:
