In Depth

From the first notes we played with this synth, we were impressed. It’s got the massive warmth and fat tone of the real thing. And it has a lot going for it too: The synth features a high-quality oscillator with zero aliasing, and a choice between sawtooth, triangle and square waveforms. It also has as an incredible filter. This is where the company got its name as well as its reputation: this feature is what makes it sound the most like a true analog synth. Both the oscillator and the filter can be modulated by the plug-in’s LFO and/or the envelope generator (EG). The LFO has tempo sync, triangle and square waveforms, plus an adjustable wave balance for getting other waveform shapes. The envelope generator has attack, decay, sustain, and release controls, and an additional “hold” control that adds additional sustain by holding down keys for longer. With both of these modulators engaged, you can really add some great envelope and filtering effects to the signal. Additionally, you have pulse-width modulation, and can introduce noise. The cool way that each of these modulators, oscillators and filters combine makes this plug-in a lot of fun to explore and get to know.

Luckily for us, commitment to analog tone doesn’t mean there aren’t some cool modern day features to go along with it! If you’re just diving into synths, you’ll be relieved to know that the plug-in comes with tons of great presets that really illustrate the range of sounds contained here. These not only sound great and can dial in a totally usable tone, they can illustrate what each parameter control does to a signal. The help controls take that even further, with detailed explanations of each parameter (available by simply holding the mouse icon over a button.) You’ll have tons of great sounds at your disposal, with all the tools you need to make the most of it. This is definitely a must-try plug-in if you’re going for analog synth tone and capabilities in your DAW.
